Mosquito Control Sunshine Coast

April 2017

ONE month after ex-Cyclone Debbie and the mozzies on the Sunshine Coast are in plague proportions.

Mosquitoes can ruin your entire summer if they hold you hostage inside your home, afraid to come outside. With the threat of things like Ross River Virus, who wouldn’t want mosquito control.

Sunshine Coast Council has confirmed mosquito numbers are the highest they’ve been since 1991. Our beautiful Sunshine Coast has also recently seen a rise in the dreaded Ross River Virus. With mosquitoes, can come disease. The Ross River Virus is transmitted by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are both a nuisance as well as a health threat.

‘Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Public Health Physician, Dr Andrew Langley said there had been 178 cases of Ross River Virus notified to Queensland Health in the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie council areas this year so far. However; their figures were only people who had seen a doctor and provided a specimen for laboratory testing.

Ross River Virus causes inflammation and pain in multiple joints. Symptoms may include a fever then a raised red rash up to ten days later. The joint pain can be severe and usually lasts from two to six weeks,” he said.

Sunshine Coast Council updated their website on the 26 April 2017, about our Management Porgram:

‘Council has a proactive program to manage mosquitoes. It includes regular surveillance and larval treatments of mosquito-prone areas to minimise the public health risks at the source. This is done through ground and aerial applications of two main control products – Methoprene and BTI.

Please note: Council does not spray for adult flying mosquitoes around your house. The control program targets mosquito breeding locations on public land and along waterways. The control of mosquitoes and removing or treating mosquito breeding on residential land is the responsibility of the landholder.’

Sunshine Coast Council will be upping the ante in its war against mosquitoes. At a council Ordinary Meeting 6/4/17, the status of the mosquito control program for the current financial year was examined. Of the 27 recommended actions introduced following an internal review of the control program in the 2008/2009 financial year, 15 have been completed and 12 have commenced.

Mosquito numbers typically increase during wet weather or following tide triggers. So the after math of cyclone Debbie still prevails.

Our technicians are trained mosquito control experts dedicated to one thing: getting rid of mosquitoes so you can enjoy being outside again.
